Flint - Genesee County opened homeless awareness week at 9:00 a.m. Monday morning with a press conference featuring Flint City Mayor Dayne Walling, several City of Flint officials and representatives from various homeless services agencies at the One Stop Housing Resource Center.
During the press conference, Mayor Walling spoke of the 1.7 million dollar stimulus grant that had been awarded to the City of Flint for homeless prevention and rapid rehousing programs. The money will be used to address local residents who have experienced financial hardships due to the current economic climate.
Also on Monday was the Literacy Drive sponsored by the Mission of Hope and the Genesee County Literacy Coalition. Potential tutoring volunteers or those needing assistance with developing their reading skills were invited to the Mission of Hope from 11-4.

The 10th Annual Homeless Luncheon on Tuesday, November 10th was a huge success, serving a few hundred guests between the three lunch and one dinner events. Members of the Genesee County Homeless Luncheon Committee, representatives from various health agencies, social work students and an army of volunteers were present to serve meals, perform health screenings, administer flu shots, and distribute care packages for event guests. ABC-12 was gracious enough to come out and do a live spot on their noon news broadcast from First Presbyterian Church.
The homeless luncheon committee would like to give a huge thanks to everyone who donated or came out and volunteered for the event.
